Abstract

The causes of maternal mortality are difficult to classify. The authors accept the criteria of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Over an 8 yr period (1965 to 1972), the incidence of maternal mortality reached 6.9 per 10,000 living births (0.69 per 100,000), among 150,943 deliveries. During this period, the index showed a falling trend. Infection and hemorrhage were the main causes of death. Emphasis is placed upon sepsis as a complication of criminal abortion.
