Abstract
This article studies the priority given by Husserl to meaning in terms of expression in his early works, which was considered unproductive. By contrast, in his later writings, the genesis of consciousness is correlative to expression and inter-subjective communication. Guided by Merleau-Ponty, in particular, I shall focus on the shift that occurs in Husserl's The Origin of Geometry. Nevertheless, I shall contextualize, in each of his works, his reiterated interpretation of Husserl's intention of bringing experience to the expression of its own meaning in order to demonstrate Merleau-Ponty and Husserl's semantic congruency by providing a thematic background for even their "non-thoughts". This is evidenced in the Merleau-Pontian conception of incomplete reduction, operative intentionality and phenomenology as interrogation, which makes creative expression possible, and moves conceptually beyond Husserl.
