Tailor-made or Cookie-Cutter IT Governance Framework

Abstract

IT governance is an integral part of any organization. From start-ups to established multinational organizations, a specific type of IT governance is to be followed. IT governance is not a standalone segment that is challenging the organization's overall governance but a component of the overall governance that works along with many other departments of the organization. Thus, the question of how an appropriate IT governance framework is selected for an organization still remains unclear. There are different paths that a firm can pursue: identify and select an existing framework as there are many frameworks that are readily available which are regularly updated with new findings, or organizations have the option of creating their own customized framework that is tailor-made according to the scope, standard, and other intricacies of the organization or the organization can choose to iteratively reach the optimized governance by establishing capability maturity model. If an organization chooses the first route, then it can proceed with a hassle-free, existing cookie-cutter governance framework that they can readily implement. On the other hand, if organizations go forward with the latter approach, they will have to create a tailor-made framework from scratch. The maturity model, which is comparatively the longer route, results in a tailored framework and requires fewer resources.
