Extracting Nyadran Cultural Values to Develop the Core Attitudes of Facilitative Counselors in the Counseling Process

Abstract

This study was motivated by the lack of exploration of local cultural values as a source of strengthening counselors' basic attitudes, especially in a multicultural context. The Nyadran tradition in Pelang Lor Village, Ngawi, is one of the cultural representations that is rich in meaning but has not been widely studied from a counseling perspective. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to extract the values contained in the Nyadran tradition in Pelang Lor Village, Ngawi. This is a qualitative study using a phenomenological approach aimed at exploring the values within the Nyadran tradition. Data collection was conducted through informal interviews with tradition custodians and documentary studies. Data were analyzed descriptively through three stages: collection, processing, and drawing conclusions, to uncover the deeper meanings of the social and cultural experiences of the community related to the Nyadran tradition. The results of this study indicate that the cultural values within the Nyadran tradition in Pelang Lor Village reflect attitudes of compassion, solidarity, and mutual aid that are relevant for development in counseling practice. Compassion serves as the foundation for the counselor's initial attitude in understanding the client's feelings, while the values of solidarity and mutual assistance can strengthen the supportive counselor-client relationship. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that the internalization of local cultural values can strengthen the counselor's facilitative attitude. Implicitly, cultural values such as those contained in the Nyadran tradition need to be integrated into counseling education and practice to form multicultural counselors rooted in local wisdom.
