Abstract
The Narendra Modi Stadium, located in Ahmedabad, India, opened in 2020 and is currently the largest cricket stadium in the World. A polytetrafluoroethylene coated fiberglass tensile membrane supported by radial cables between a single looped inner tension cable ring and an outer dual compression ring make up the roof structural system for the stadium. Such a structural system is known to offer a very lightweight structural system for stadium roof structures without obstructing views for spectators. The lightweight structural system for the roof and motivation to keep it independent of the reinforced concrete bowl were driven by predictable performance under seismic and other forces. The erection procedure for the compression ring influenced the connection design strategy. Erection of the roof started after substantial completion of the bowl structure, leaving plenty of time for material procurement and fabrication of cables, structural steel and membrane material.
