Abstract

The continuing education of teachers is a fundamental factor for their professional performance. Some academic programs have invested in teaching qualifications in different areas. The Postgraduate Course of the Professional Master's in the Teaching of Biology in Network -PROFBIO, based at UFPB, offers professional training focused upon innovative education through Active Methodologies (AM). These AM aim to fill a gap that traditional education is unable to do, which is to keep up with the demands of young people and today's society. Through AM the student is the protagonist of their own learning process. However, in the reality of basic education, many challenges are still encountered in achieving methodological innovations. The research sought to identify the difficulties faced by basic education teachers regarding the implementation of active methodologies in teaching biology in public schools in the state of Paraíba. It was a quantitative and qualitative study. It involved basic education biology teachers, who are Master’s students of PROFBIO at UFPB. The data was collected through online questionnaires -Google forms tool. The sample consisted of 26 teachers. The results reveal the challenges to be overcome by school teachers for the implementation of active methodologies such as: overcoming the traditional teaching model and dealing with the critical school infrastructure and also the lack of pedagogical training to support curricular activities. Such factors directly compromise the quality of teaching, making the learning process more difficult. The need for the school space to be changed is evident, with technical and pedagogical investments to develop the new educational scenarios, adapting to the emerging demands in the education of school students and to the challenges of contemporary society. Keywords: Active Methodologies; Science teaching; Basic education; Public schools.
