Abstract

Obituary. His lecturing "...the journey was always full of interesting detours, the destination was always worth reaching." The idea of 'punctuated equilibrium' (Eldredge & Gould). Contingency is a nojor factor in macroevolution: the normal rules of natural selection do not apply to catastrophic events. Wrote 300 essays under the banner "This view of life" in Natural History (1974-2001).
