Gender dimensions in the analysis of macro-poverty linkages

Abstract

Women and men experience poverty differently. Taking gender inequalities into consideration in the design of CGE models can significantly improve our understanding of the mechanisms through which macroeconomic policies affect poverty. This article reviews current approaches to gender modelling and suggests ways in which CGE models can be further developed to include gender features The ideal combination of such features in a CGE model will vary, depending on the issues analysed, the country context and data availability. At a minimum, a gender-aware model should incorporate segmentation in labour markets and some representation of the unpaid household economy. © Overseas Development Institute, 2005.
