Abstract
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is characterized by a profound and disabling fatigue, accompanied by several other symptoms, resulting in a significant functional impairment with a reduction in occupational, personal, social and educational status. There are a constellation of pathophysiological abnormalities, suggesting that the syndrome is a heterogeneous condition with a complex and multifactorial etiology. Although there is a significant comorbidity with psychiatric disorders, CFS should be considered an independent entity, however the patient perception and coping skills can perpetuate the illness. Treatment is symptom based with pharmacological and behavioural interventions. Cognitive-behavioural techniques and graded exercise con be effective. The assessment and treatment of the CFS should be multi dimensional and tailored to the needs of the individual patient.
