Abstract
The purpose of this research was to characterize the activated charcoal made from fibers of Areca catechu and to determine how the effect of pH, contact time, adsorbent and temperature on the adsorption process of the dye Indigosol Blue 04-B and determines its adsorption capacity. Active charcoal making is done by carbonation and activation. The activator used was H 3 PO 4 10% with a soaking time of 24 hours and activation temperature 150 0 C for 30 minutes. Characterization was performed using UV-Vis Spectrophotometry and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET). The optimum wavelength of Indigosol Blue 04-B dyes was got from characterization using spectrophotometer UV-Vis was 580 nm. The surface area produced by activated charcoal is 41,101 m 2 /g. Types of isotherms tested were Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The optimum conditions for Indigosol Blue 04-B dyes was pH 7, contact time 40 minutes, adsorbent weight 150 mg and the temperature 25 0 C. The adsorption capacity of activated charcoal to Indigosol Blue 04-B with using a isotherm Freundlich dye was 19,8 mg/g.
