Slavery: Annual Bibliographical Supplement (2022)

Abstract

The following supplement continues the coverage of secondary writings published since 1900 in western European languages on slavery or the slave trade anywhere in the world: monographs, notes and articles in scholarly periodicals, substantial reviews and review essays, dissertations, conference papers, and chapters in edited volumes and Festschriften focused primarily on slavery or slave trading. Readers unfamiliar with other technical aspects of the presentation may refer to the notes introducing previous supplements in this journal. Full bibliographic references to edited collections of essays and conference proceedings appear under editors’ names, with cross references to their contents under the names of contributing authors in sections of the bibliography specific to their separate topics and different from the placing of the volume as a whole. The corresponding individual entries provide short-title references to the full collective entry. The elements of this bibliography first appeared in Slavery: A Comparative Teaching Bibliography, edited by Joseph C. Miller in 1977.Footnote1 In 1980, Miller started editing the bibliography through annual instalments in Slavery and Abolition, in collaboration with Larissa V. Brown (supplement listing works published in 1983), James V. Skalnik (1984 and 1985), David F. Appleby (1986 and 1987), Randolph C. Head (1988, 1990, and 1991), Jena R. Gaines (1989). Materials accumulated through the 1983 supplement appeared in Slavery: A Worldwide Bibliography, 1900–1982.Footnote2 In 1992, all materials compiled between 1983 and 1991 were corrected and consolidated in a new single-volume indexed bibliography containing 10,351 entries, published as Slavery and Slaving in World History: A Bibliography, 1900–1991.Footnote3 The series of annual updates resumed with the 1992 supplement in Slavery and Abolition 14, no. 3 (1993): 264–304, in collaboration with Emlyn Eisenach and continued in the following years with Janis N. Gibbs co-editing the supplements of 1993–1995. In 1998, Miller re-published Slavery and Slaving in World History, together with a second volume consolidating and indexing 3,897 entries compiled between 1992 and 1996.Footnote4 Additionally, he continued publishing the annual supplements in Slavery and Abolition, in collaboration with John R. Holloran (1997, 1998, and 1999), Roderick H. Martin (2000), Thomas E. Ridenhour Jr. (2001), Fred K. Drougula (2002 and 2003), and Thomas Thurston (2004). In 2006, the series continued in Slavery & Abolition under Thurston’s editorship, covering titles published between 2005 and 2021.
