We review the approaches to poverty measurement used in Latin America and show the need to complement quantitative and qualitative studies. Among the latter stand out evaluations with the participation of those affected, whose methodology is used by a pioneering study in Chile commissioned by the Foundation for Overcoming Poverty. Results of this study in northern Chile are shown, which rescues the voices of poor men and women on poverty. Using the qualitative software MAXqda, dimensions such as the definition of poverty and its causes, strategies to overcome it, and options for change are analyzed. Main results show a multidimensional conceptualization of the phenomenon by those affected, who attributed the main causes of poverty at individual, family and social context.
