Abstract
This article analyzes, from the perspective of the intellectual history, the laicism process during the nineteenth century in Hispanic America, focusing on the eschatological reading on the part of certain Catholic intellectuals. The argument is that eschatological thought must be understood beyond its theological dimensions, considering it as an apocalyptic reading of the social and cultural changes that political modernity brought about for religion and its role in the public sphere during the 19th Century.
