Abstract
This paper reports recent trends at the intersection of the fields Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and physical movement through a literature review of eight conference papers from the CHI Play 2017 and 2018 conferences. The selected papers report technology design for physical movement and thereby create new experiences through games. The CHI Play conference is chosen based on its focus on combining digital systems with physical exercise. An in-depth analysis is conducted by applying Cresswell's five steps: 1) identify key search terms 2) locate literature 3) evaluate selected literature 4) organize and visualize literature and 5) create a summary of the literature. An analytical step is appended to this review, by applying David Benyon's PACT (People, Activities, Context and Technology) framework as the analytical and mapping tool. The key findings are: P) a focus on young people including students as user groups, A) competition and gamification as key elements to activate the participants, C) social interaction as both a main driver to engage users and the main goal for the games, T) the technologies used are mainly mobile devices - but Virtual Reality, motion sensing, and other technologies are also applied.
