REWRITING HUSBAND–WIFE ROLES IN SOCIETY 5.0: A FIQH PERSPECTIVE ON FAMILY RESILIENCE

Abstract

This study examines the evolving roles of husbands and wives in strengthening family resilience in the society 5.0 era from a fiqh perspective, by tracing social changes resulting from technology and culture. This study was conducted through literature review using a descriptive narrative approach and content analysis of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) perspective literature. This study presents a new perspective on the exchange roles of husbands and wives in contemporary Muslim families as a response to social, economic and cultural dynamics. First, it innovatively employed a multidimensional approach to causal factors behind role exchange as a consequence of economic crises or emergency conditions. This study reveals that role changes are also driven by factors such as education, career, health, gender equality values, and mutual, conscious agreements among partners, all of which serve as strategies for family resilience. The second, the exchange of roles husbands and wives positively impacts the efficiency of domestic task completion, promotes gender equality, strengthens relationship harmony, improves psychological well-being, sets a positive example for children, and supports the social and economic flexibility of the family. Finally, the relationship between husbands and wives should be rooted in love, protection, and balanced cooperation, as taught in the Qur'an and Sunnah. The flexibility of roles in the family is in line with Islamic principles as long as it brings benefits and prevents harm. The fiqh perspective emphasizes that any form that brings benefit and prevents harm is part of the objectives of sharia (maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah), especially in term of necessity (dharūriyyah) and urgency (ḥājiyyah). The division of roles within the family is flexible and aligns with Islamic values, particularly the principle of mu‘āsyarah bil ma‘rūf (living together in a good manner). This flexibility is also in line with the fiqh principle “necessity permits what is otherwise prohibited,” as well as the concept of “maslahah mursalah” (seeking benefit). From a fiqh perspective, these roles are permissible (mubah) and even recommended (sunnah). Role exchange within the family is a valid and encouraged method for adapting to maintain harmony, continuity and resilience in facing the challenges of the 5.0 society.
