Abstract

The adsorption of Cu(II) at the silica-water interface in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridyl (bipy) can be explained in terms of formation of ternary surface complexes (⪫Si—O)nCu(bipy)k(2-n)+ where (n,k) = (1,1), (1,2) and (2,1). The surface complexes formed with Cu(bipy)k2+ are markedly more stable than those formed with Cu(aq)2+.
