Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts

Abstract

The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a side-to- side portosystemic shunt created by interventional radiologists via percutaneous access of the internal jugular vein. Immediate decompression of the hypertensive portal system can be achieved thereby arresting life- threatening variceal hemorrhage. It can be effective in treating ascites associated with portal hypertension as well. Regular maintenance with ultrasound surveillance and percutaneous (outpatient) TIPS revision is required in many patients to maintain potency because of frequent post-TIPS stenosis.
