Abstract

Because of heavy reliance upon research to develop public policy and provide medical treatments as well as to develop new products, a need exists for the conduct of accurate, ethical research. Coupled with increased reliance upon research is increased pressure upon scientists and researchers to conduct research. This pressure has resulted in increased competition for sources of funds necessary to conduct the studies. Success in obtaining funding for research often hinges upon a successful track record in research. Consequently, researchers sometimes choose to pursue unethical behaviors in their quest for funding and job security. Ethical decisions, often not recognized, face researchers at all phases of their research. To maintain public confidence in research, researchers must recognize the ethical problems that arise and engage in appropriate behaviors.
