Abstract

This study aims to examine the typology of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in agribusiness development and its implications for pesantren economic sustainability in East Java, Indonesia. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving three pesantren: Riyadlul Jannah (Mojokerto), Al-Rifa’i.e., (Malang), and Al-Mardliyah (Madiun). Each pesantren has developed an agribusiness model based on local potential, such as organic vegetables, organic black rice, and golden melon. The findings show that integrating agribusiness activities into the pesantren curriculum enhances the institution’s economic self-reliance and the entrepreneurial skills of its students (santri). However, several challenges remain, including limited access to capital, human resources, and market distribution. Therefore, supportive policy frameworks and appropriate business models are needed to optimize the strategic role of pesantren in inclusive and sustainable local economic development.
