Abstract

In a theoretical framework, vine training systems are considered as an ancient cultural heritage. Historiography has assumed the difference between Punic sine pedamentis and Italic cum pedamentis viticulture. In this paper, exploration of such an assumption is conducted in GIS by modelling the riparia/uinea agronomical ratio in the frontier of the colonia Hasta Regia and the municipium of Gades. This ratio is based on Columella’s standard of the proportion between vineyards and riparian spaces required to provide raw material for a vine training system. Now, a new approach on the self-sufficiency of plots is tested.
