Abstract

The use of modified asphalt in the construction of flexible pavements has expanded globally in response to harsher conditions during its lifetime and for a better performance for prolonging its life. The modified asphalt in Costa Rica is a recent alternative, currently there are no modified asphalt producers, so its manufacture has been framed to companies producing HMA, which modify the asphalt plant using basic systems, which do not allow presentations using certain additives, and where quality control is difficult. This research aims to compare different types of additives for asphalt, within which are the currently used in Costa Rica characterized by having a liquid consistency and others caracterized for a solid consistency that can not be use on hot mix asphalt plant and need a special procesing, the caracterization of their properties is done by rheological parameters, and finally, the project intends to some tools for assessing the effectiveness of these types of additives in improving the properties of asphalt rheology and implement the rheological testsas means to specify their properties. These rheological tests are specified within the report of the NCHRP-459 and the standards methods for modified asphalts of AAHSTO Tests. Keywords:
