Abstract
This research focuses on the spatial topic of heritage area through the fields of architecture, design, and cultural. The research aims to investigate spatial patterns in terms of visitor behavior in historic areas. The object of this research is the Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist heritage in Indonesia which is located in an urban environment, and is a leading tourist destination in Central Java. Many tourists who come to visit this site have the potential to make physical contact with the artifacts because visitors basically aim to have a spatial experience in a heritage area. Contact with artifacts has a potential to damage thousand years historical objects if there is irresponsible behavior of the visitors. Spatial studies mainly focus on visitor behavior in the temple structure, related to how visitors make contact with the temple, on the temple physical and non-physical spaces. The method used in this study includes data collection through observation in historical areas and studies through the theoretical framework of spatial behavior and heritage conservation models through the managed visiting patterns. The results of the research include that visitors' spatial behavior is influenced by temple spaces both in concrete (through dimensions, shape) and abstract (through meaning, ideology) viewed from a spatial perspective on the structure of Borobudur Temple. This research is expected to contribute to the development of spatial infrastructure and heritage conservation, especially regarding space and human interaction.
