Abstract

Myths and beliefs were an integral part of the culture of Indonesia. Nowadays, there were people who prefer myths and beliefs than logic. To change that, we especially midwife need more strategies how to make them understand pros and cons of their beliefs. The aim of this study was to describe midwife's role in enlightning people's view on myths and beliefs around pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period. This study uses a qualitative method with phenomenology approach. The informants are midwives who work in primary health care and hospital who have been handling patients practicing traditional behavior. Data collected by interviewing informants and analyzed using theory triangulation. The results of this study show that patients still practicing traditional behavior because of their parents and their oldest suggestion. Therefore, the family and relative should be educated about medical perspective toward myths and beliefs. Cooperating with traditional birth attendants, cadres, community and religion leaders to informing people is very helpful in changing people's behavior.
