Abstract
This paper describes an innovative programme for general practice training in Yorkshire. Registrars spend the whole of their training in a practice-based setting, instead of the conventional two years in hospital posts and one year as a general practice registrar (GPR). There are six-month GPR posts at the beginning and end of the training, with the middle two years in practice-based innovative posts. The Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice (JCPTGP) has agreed that this scheme fulfils the vocational training regulations. The first three registrars to undertake full innovative training (FIT) commenced their posts in February 2003. Over the next three years, a total of 12 GPRs will be appointed.
