Abstract

The goal of this chapter is to highlight the key problems of unmet contraceptive needs and contextualize them with the aim of making clear the areas for improvement. While great strides have been made in generating contraceptive medications, devices and procedures, the fact remains that not every woman who desires or could benefit from contraception is using it. As much attention has been paid to global unmet contraceptive needs, this chapter briefly touches on the global problem but focuses instead on the medical, cultural and economic reasons for unmet contraceptive needs in the United States in particular.
