Abstract

This discussion of the social role of the family physician defines him as concerned with the whole person, practicing both scientific and humanistic medicine. Training practices, both past and present are discussed, emphasizing the need for students to have more contact with patients in general practice; the personal qualities required by the family physician are discussed; and his function in present and future schemes of health care are indicated; his future role will be one of leadership of a health team, including delegation of his present work loads and a greater interest in research.
