Abstract
The most general form of the exchange interaction for Mn atoms in TbMnO3is derived, including nearest neighbour and next-nearest neighbour interactions. It is found that for each exchange path there are six independent exchange terms, leading to a rather complicated Hamiltonian. Experimentally determined constraints on the Hamiltonian are discussed. Degeneracy lifting in the spin-wave excitation spectrum is also discussed. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.
