In this work I describe some aspects of physics teaching based on astronomical subjects using a special class of stars, the binary or double stars. The known spectroscopic binary stars are studied for teaching purposes. In special, it is shown how that the application of the Doppler-Fizeau effect can be used to determine physical data such as the velocity of stars. It is also presented the basics of electromagnetic radiation spectrum, stellar spectra, and how these topics can be further discussed using the binary stars as a motivation to learning physics. As a supplementary aspect, it is also discussed the main features of the binary stars in the astrophysical approach and the importance of binary stars to several studies in physics and astronomy. © The Sociedade Brasileira de Física.
