We have developed a novel red phosphor based on a layered perovskite structure, Ba(La 1−x Eu x ) 2 Zr 3 O 10 . This phosphor showed the red photoluminescence between 580 nm and 630 nm with several excitation bands, which were composed of the charge‐transfer band related with the host matrix (around 290 nm) and the 4f ↔ 4f transitions of Eu 3+ ions (between 350 nm and 460 nm). Since this excitation band is very close to the blue (around 465 nm) or near‐UV (around 400 nm) wavelengths of GaN based LED, it is expected to be used as a complementary phosphor in the red region for the white LEDs.
