Abstract

The legislation regulating radiography dates from 1960. It has been reviewed, found to be inadequate, and new legislation is to be presented to Parliament shortly. Among the recommendations of the review report which is to be implemented is that Continuing Professional Development (CPD) be made a statutory condition of annual re-registration. The College of Radiographers introduced a CPD scheme in January 1997 which is obligatory for all members of the Society of Radiographers. The paper discusses the background to the introduction of the College scheme and to the imposition of statutory CPD in the context of the developing role of the radiographer and examines the implications for the profession of their introduction.
