Abstract
Argues that the occurrence of natural hazard phenomena can be anticipated and predicted well in advance on the basis of a fuller understanding of their causes and processes. Preventative measures can then be taken to mitigate, or even avert, their usually catastrophic outcomes. The author suggests that the key to such an understanding lies in recognising the connective patterns linking different phenomena, and then unravelling the complex interplay of climatic and geological natural forces which shape such outcomes. The book provides an inter-disciplinary treatment of a wide range of climatological and geological hazards and their social impacts. -P.Hardiman
