Abstract
Cable structures are used extensively in bridge engineering, including stayed cables of cable-stayed bridges, main cable and sus-penders of suspension bridges, and hangers of arch bridges. Thesetypes of cable structures can offer an elegant and economic bridgealternative. They have become a primary choice for long-spanbridges throughout the world, and methods of designing and con-structing them have developed rapidly during the last two decades.Accordingly, research on the design, analysis, inspection, and reha-bilitation of these types of structures has become one of the mostinteresting and timely subjects in bridge engineering. The specialissue of theJournal of Bridge Engineeringis intended to promoteand improve the analysis, design, inspection, and rehabilitation ofcable structures. Twenty-three papers were selected for this specialissue, including 15 technical papers, six case studies, and two tech-nical notes. These papers present recent advances in the design, analysis, vibration control, damage detection, and evaluation meth-ods of different types of cable structures, including cable-stayed,suspension, and arch bridges.
