Abstract
Obesity is a chronic, pandemic and multifactorial disease char-acterized by pathophysiological processes that result in an increase in dysfunctional adipose tissue, which is associated with multiple comorbidities and increased mortality. It also has the fundamental characteristic of being socially stigmatizing. In this sense, community education is a priority to improve public understanding of obesity as a chronic disease and the risks of stigma attached to it. The scientific community con-siders it a disease, which is why its recognition represents a health demand.
