Abstract

Social and environmental problems go hand- in-hand, yet assessment of developments tends to consider them in isolation if at all. This study highlights the environmental and social problems in a small community in northern Senegal, and seeks ways of providing sustainable solutions. In this agricultural project, environmental problems are relatively simple to identify; social issues are more difficult. The problems highlighted relate to land tenure issues and irrigation mismanagement: a solution can only be sustainable, if identified and implemented by the local community. A Geographical Information System is suggested as a tool for facilitating community-led improvements. © 1999 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
