Abstract

Chlamydia pneumoniae was able to survive and to multiply in the human monocytic cell line Mono Mac 6. Growth of C. pneumoniae induced production of tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin 1β, and interleukin 6, as well as up-regulation of the CD14 molecule in a time-dependent manner. Infection of monocytic cells and a proinflammatory cytokine response may be important in C. pneumoniae pathogenesis.
