Abstract

The purpose of this essay is a tribute to\rCelso Furtado and Gilberto Dupas through a crossreading\rof the works The myth of economic development\r(Furtado, 1974) and The myth of progress (Dupas,\r2006). In both works the authors reach the same\rconclusion: development/progress is a myth. Based\ron the discussion of environmental issues in economy,\ron the focus on two themes (the environment\rand poverty), on the theoretical and methodological\rdifferences and on historical periods, we intend\rto establish a dialogue with these authors, trying\rto understand differences and similarities in their\rideas. In general, it is concluded that both consider\rthe development/progress a myth, since it brings\rthe destruction of nature and persistence of poverty\rand social inequalities.
