Abstract

Pitfall traps were used in lucerne fields in Kentucky in 1983-85 to monitor the seasonality and abundance of immature examples of Carabidae. Head-capsule widths were determined for larvae in different instars for Evarthrus sodalis [Cyclotrachelus sodalis], Harpalus pensylvanicus, Chlaenius tricolor, Scarites subterraneus, Amara cupreolata and A. impuncticollis. The larval and adult catches indicated that Cyclotrachelus sodalis, H. pensylvanicus and A. impuncticollis overwintered as larvae, while A. cupreolata and S. subterraneus did so as adults
