Abstract
In Colombia, rice milling takes place in many cases, without taking into account sustainability considerations, mainly due to the inadequate management of its waste which generates negative environmental impacts that must be considered. The objective of this study is the design of a model of sustainable management of husk waste in rice SMEs through a case study, the energy use is proposed through cogeneration based on the characterization of the process. Steam turbine generation technology was selected based on technical, environmental, and financial criteria. Once the preliminary design was made, financial analyses showed that the best option is when state tax incentives are incorporated. Cogeneration is a valid option for the use of agroindustrial waste from rice mills, even in small-scale companies since it meets an internal energy and heat need, improves the competitiveness and environmental performance of rice mills.
