Abstract

The effect of multiple scattering on the photodetection statistics of radiation that is both chaotic and highly degenerate was calculated. It was found that even for weak transmission, there appear large deviations of the photocount distribution from Poisson statistics that are absent in the radiation from a black body or a laser. They take the form of an enhancement of Varn above n̄ by a factor ∝ f and a slowing down of the large-n decay rate of P(n) by a factor 1/f. Explicit results were obtained for a double barrier geometry.
