Abstract

Background: Environmental pollution is a worldwide problem that has a negative impact on respiratory health. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is one of the most harmful pollutants for the respiratory system. The objective of the study was to evaluate the association between exposure to PM2.5 concentrations and respiratory mortality. Methods: 8,825 daily respiratory mortality data were collected from the National population death information registration management system in Changsha from January 2015 to December 2018. Daily measurements of environmental pollutants were obtained from 10 environmental monitoring stations. Results: There is a significant association between PM2.5 concentrations and the risk of respiratory mortality. The increase in mortality occurs both in acute exposure to PM2.5 and in its accumulated exposure. Due to the increase in PM2.5 levels, the cold season increases the risk of respiratory pathology. Conclusion: There is an increase in respiratory disease morbidity and mortality secondary to PM2.5 exposure.
