Abstract
Prior to 1975, when the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (I.D.E.A.; 20 U.S.C. § 1400 et seq.) was first passed, schoolhouse doors were closed to many children with disabilities. Even as access to educational opportunities has increased, associated mental health services are frequently short-changed. This article offers lessons and caveats for clinicians derived from recent legislative amendments and developments in the case law surrounding the I.D.E.A. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
