Abstract

The application of CVD diamond films synthesized by the arc discharge plasma jet CVD method to ultraprecision cutting tools has been investigated. The CVD diamond film was shaped into a cutting edge by YAG laser irradiation and the hot metal polishing method. The polished diamond was then brazed to a shank. The nose radius roundness of the cuttind edge is 0.5 µm. Cutting of aluminium alloy (JISA5083) was performed to evaluate the cutting tool. The cutting tool was evaluated in terms of wear and chip of cutting edge, shapeand roughness of workpiece surface and shape of chips. The result of the experiments shows that the CVD diamond cutting tool can be used for ultraprecision cutting of aluminium alloy.
