Abstract

Indonesian Muslim Student, known in Indonesia as Pelajar Islam Indonesia (PII) is an Islamic movement that emerged in the post independent era of the Republic of Indonesia in May 4 th 1947. The historical imperative of this movement is twofold; (1) to modernize Islamic teachings and (2) to Islamize modernity. This project was born out of the situation of Muslims in Indonesia in the early period of post-independence where Muslims were divided by debates on serious issue such as the relation between the state and religion as well as other issues such as the superiority of religious education represented by the pesantrens over the secular ones represented by public schools inherited mostly from the Dutch colonial government. In that settings, Indonesian Muslim Student as a social organization offered a more holistic approach integrating Islamic and Nationalistic approaches towards social movement.
