Abstract

A two-step tempering process was performed on L10 FePt films in a magnetic field. FePt (20 nm) films were firstly annealed at 700 oC for 30 minutes and then tempered at lower temperature in a magnetic field of ∼ 3500 Oe along the normal direction of films. The influence of magnetic field on (001) texture of FePt films during the two-step tempering process were investigated. It was shown that (001) orientation was improved and, at the same time, distinct perpendicular anisotropy was obtained in FePt films by two-step tempering in a perpendicular magnetic field when the second temperature was around the Curie temperature of the L10 FePt films. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
