Abstract

The problems of how to plan for the public use of protected natural areas, and how to decide on an optimum number of visitors while avoiding negative effects upon the environment, are complicated in both Spain in general, and Catalonia in particular, by the division of responsibilities between various levels of administration and by a growing tendency to privatise services. A standard response is to zone the access to protected areas according to the fragility of the ecosystems. -J.Naylon
