Abstract

The information provided by church registers, magazines, tax registers and a testament, shows the different dimensions of the authority of those individuals that were in the indigenous council in the "Altos de Arica" during the last few years of the Colonial Period. It is stated that the strengthening of the indigenous council after the rebellion of Tupac Amaru II, in terms of political power, arose from social structures in which the ritual kinship relationships played a decisive rol. It is noticed that religious and political functions, active participation in local trade and control over the legal strategies which were granted by the colonial order, were attributes of the ethnic leaderships in the Andes which were not only exercised by the cacique, but also in main individuals in the XVIII Century.
