Abstract
First introduces this isolated state, the smallest nation studied in this volume, and historical aspects of its tourism and recreation. The paper then describes the administration of tourism and the means of access to the country in terms of both domestic and international tourism. The author also considers the role of tourism in economic development and recent changes in external and internal circumstances, concluding that the development of tourism will only achieve a major role in Albania's economic modernisation programme if it occurs within a stable national and regional context. -P.Hardiman
