Abstract

Synthetic polymers are most often observed in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectra as cationized molecules. The means by which such ions are created and brought into the gas phase are reviewed, with particular focus on preformed ions and cation-pickup reactions in the desorption plume.
