Abstract
This article revisits three familiar narratives of Mount Rainier history from 1850-1925 to illustrate how Native people negotiated with non-lndians to define the economy of place. Indian knowledge of the mountain served as a commodity of value, and its employ can be seen as productive intellectual labor in evolving colonial contexts.
