Abstract

Investigated dental school students' knowledge of aging, comfortwith patient diversity, and patient care strategies. A total of 321dental students aged 20-47 (mean age 26.7) from the University ofBuffalo completed surveys at different periods during 4 years ofdental school and before and after completing a seminar concentratingon geriatric dentistry issues. The survey included Palmore's Facts onAging Quiz 1 (FAQ 1), comfort with diversity questions, and patientmanagement scenarios. Six patient scenarios tested how students thinkthey would manage difficult patients, including a scenario where anolder patient becomes disabled during the course of treatment or tellsthe dentist that he or she is contemplating suicide. Results indicatedthat dental students' knowledge of aging was low, comfort withgeriatric issues improved after the first year of training, andstrategies for patient care changed with experience. Results suggestthat fourth year students were the most advanced and comfortable witholder people, particularly after completion of the 8-week training.(TS) (AgeLine Database, copyright 2006 EBSCO Publishing, Inc., allrights reserved)
